Nurturing Values through Book Refurbishing Day
At the heart of a holistic education lies the commitment to fostering inclusivity and trustworthiness. Our community believes that values are not just taught, but nurtured through meaningful practice. This vision came to life during our recent Book Refurbishing Day, a student-led initiative where Primary Years Learners (PLLs) took center stage in a hands-on demonstration of responsibility and care.
Empowerment through Action By leading the process of cleaning, repairing, and revitalizing damaged books, our students demonstrated student-initiated action. This wasn’t just about maintenance; it was a commitment to preserving access to knowledge for all. Such initiatives align perfectly with our mission to develop caring, principled, and reflective learners who see themselves as active global citizens.
Beyond the Classroom This authentic experience allowed students to transform understanding into service. When a student chooses to restore a worn page, they are connecting their learning with lived experience. The event provided a generative space for exploring:
Equity: Ensuring every student has access to quality resources.
Environmental Responsibility: Promoting sustainability through restoration.
Empathy: Caring for shared resources for the benefit of others.
Voice, Choice, and Ownership While facilitators and parents provided support, the student voice and ownershipremained paramount. Students engaged in collaborative real-life problem solving, honing transdisciplinary skills in literacy, social studies, and ethics. Through this purposeful act of advocacy, our learning community becomes more sustainable and inclusive—one story at a time.
The event reflected several key attributes of the IB Learner Profile:
- Balanced – Understand the importance of balancing different aspects of their lives – intellectual, physical, and emotional – to achieve well-being for themselves and others; recognize their interdependence with other people and with the world in which they live.
- Caring – Show empathy, compassion, and respect; have a commitment to service, and act to make a positive difference in the lives of others and in the world around them.
- Knowledgeable – Explore concepts, ideas, and issues across a range of disciplines, engaging with significant local and global topics.
